Something different - Mission CAPE

Specification

A large employer wanting to train a group of senior IT staff to work across the organisation to implement new ways of working.

Background

The IT staff would be responsible for consulting and supporting other Departments as they carry out the necessary changes. Although the IT staff were technically skilled the training was to highlight the skills necessary to engage people in the process and to be able to respond to their needs.

Bond LogoThe Solution

It became clear that in order to be successful the IT staff needed to operate as Change Agents, stimulating and supporting change in other teams.

From this came the idea of basing the events on the world of Secret Agents.
Parallels were drawn with the world of secret agents i.e. working in the field, having a mission, infiltrating organisations, the “Q” Tool kit, working in the diplomatic service, identifying the enemy, gaining co-operation, getting out of “sticky situation”, anticipating problems considering possibilities and identifying solutions.

Title

Change Agents Preparation Events (CAPE)
A theme was been adopted for the events which was around the fantasy world of Secret Agents - something between “Mission Impossible” and “James Bond”, which added a sense of fun and creativity to the subject matter.
To reflect this the terminology and references were changed in the programme. Also the materials and generic exercises used on the events drew on this theme to encourage innovation and original thinking.
Module 1 Making Contacts and Infiltration
The success of any assignment depends on the relationships between the parties involved. It is important to ensure that your contact understands what is involved, accepts the assignment and is committed to working with you towards its successful completion.
Establishing this relationship and gaining commitment which you can depend upon requires keen interpersonal skills. This mission of this module, should you decide to accept it, is to provide you with an interpersonal strategy and practical experience to support your work with contacts in the field.
Module 2

Investigating Problems & the “Q” kit for finding solutions
The assignment involves solving problems on two levels

  1. Independently using the resources available to you, taking decisions which will determine your own actions.
  2. In conjunction with other Change Agents or Contacts; working in teams to develop ideas and solutions to be incorporated into a wider planning process.
In both of these situations your approach will benefit from a knowledge of problem solving models and the “Q” kit of tools for use at each stage.
This module will provide all the Change Agents with the same information and the experience of working in teams to develop solutions.
